A Purpose in Pain - Kole Schapker

VERSES TO READ:

  • Romans 8:18
  • Romans 5:3-5
  • Romans 8:28
  • Revelation 21:4

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

  1. How have past struggles or painful experiences helped to strengthen your faith or shape your character? Can you see evidence of God’s work in your life through those challenges?

  2. How does the hope of eternal life help you endure pain and suffering in the present? In what ways can this hope shape your perspective on your current struggles?

PRAYER TO PRAY:

God, we thank You for being with us in our pain. When we walk through difficult situations, I pray that You would help us to remember that You are with us, and that You are shaping us, drawing us closer to You, and that You’re using our pain to prepare us for greater things. I pray that You would give us the strength to endure, and the hope to see Your purpose in every trial that we face. I pray that we would find comfort in Your presence, Lord. We cling to the hope that one day all our suffering will be wiped away forever when we are with You for eternity in heaven. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let’s be honest—life is filled with pain. At some point we all experience suffering, whether it’s physical, emotional, or spiritual. It’s one of the most difficult parts of being human. It’s not always easy to understand. Why does a loving God allow His children to suffer? Is there any meaning or purpose in pain?

In a fallen world, pain is an unavoidable reality. From the moment sin entered the world, suffering has become a part of the human condition. In fact, even Jesus himself was not spared from pain and suffering. He was mocked, betrayed, beaten, and crucified. Yet, His suffering was not meaningless. It served a far greater purpose—our salvation.
Similarly, while our pain may not always make sense in the moment, God is working in ways we might not immediately grasp. Sometimes, God’s preparation comes packaged as pain.

Paul writes in Romans 5:3-5 that God uses pain to mold us—shaping our character, building our endurance, and strengthening our hope. God might be using the pain that we’re enduring to do something in us before He does something through us. Without pain, we might never fully grasp the depth of God’s grace or develop the perseverance we need to face life’s challenges.
In the same way gold is refined by fire, our faith is refined through trials. It humbles us, reminding us that we are not in control, but that God is ruler over all. Through our pain, we often grow closer to Him, learning to trust Him more deeply.

The Bible talks frequently about pain and how God meets us in our pain. God promises in Romans 8:28 that He will work all things together for our good and His glory. Pain is part of the process by which God prepares us for something greater. We read in 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 that God comforts us in our sufferings so that we can comfort others who are suffering.

God’s comfort doesn’t eliminate our pain, but it does provide a deeper sense of peace and assurance in the midst of it. He doesn’t promise to relieve us from all of our troubles, but He does promise to be with us in them. As we experience His comfort, we are equipped to help others who are walking through their own trials with the same comfort God has given us.

I have certainly had my fair share of struggles and difficult experiences in my life so far. But looking back on them, I can clearly see God’s hand in each and every one of them. I can see how He used that pain and suffering to shape me into the person I am today. Honestly, if I hadn’t gone through those trials, I wouldn’t be able to share this with you today.

So, as we navigate the painful seasons of life, let us remember that our suffering is not in vain. God has a purpose in it, and He is using it to shape, refine, and prepare us for an eternal glory far beyond anything we can imagine. He tells us in Revelation 21:4 that in Heaven He will wipe away every tear, and there will be no more pain, no more suffering, and no more death. Even though we may not always see it, in faith, we choose to believe it.
