What baptism is

The word in the Bible means to go under the water. At The Hills, we baptize by immersion: you go all the way under and come back up. Here's what that picture means.

Your old life is buried

Going under the water is a picture of dying to your old life and being buried with Jesus. There's no new life without letting the old one go.

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Romans 6:3 (NIV)

You're washed clean

The water pictures what only Jesus can do: wash away the sin we can't wash off on our own.

And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.

Acts 22:16 (NIV)

You belong to God

The Bible calls it a covenant: a bond between you and God. In baptism, you say in front of everyone that your life is his.

For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.

Romans 6:5 (NIV)

You're raised to a new life

Coming up out of the water pictures being raised with Jesus into a new life. It's how you accept what he's done for you and start living it.

We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.

Romans 6:4 (NIV)

When you're baptized, this is who you are.

for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

Galatians 3:27 (NIV)
A man raises both fists as he comes up out of the water

Why be baptized?

Jesus was baptized, and he told his followers to baptize everyone who follows him. In the Bible, it was the first thing new believers did.

A man smiles as he comes up out of the water

Does baptism save me?

Jesus saves you. Only his blood can wash sin away, and baptism is the clearest picture of that washing: your old life buried and a new one raised with him.

Why now?

In the Bible, people were baptized as soon as they believed, often the same day. You don't have to get your life together first. If you've decided to follow Jesus, you're ready.

Followed Jesus for years and never been baptized? It's not too late. Text BAPTISM to (812) 432-1981 and start today.
